Bergen Public Library

Bergen Public Library (Bergen Offentlige Bibliotek) is one of Norway’s oldest and largest public libraries. Situated in a landmark building that was constructed in 1917, it continues a long tradition of civic knowledge-sharing in the heart of the city. Today, it functions as both a local meeting place and a site of collective inquiry: it is a space for literature, gathering, and learning.

As part of across, with, nearby, the library hosts one part of On the Frontlines of Climate Justice, a two-part installation by INTERPRT and the Climate Rights project. The work explores how spatial research, legal strategies, and visual evidence are mobilised in the fight for environmental justice. Drawing on investigations from Sápmi and the Pacific, it links global climate change to situated struggles.

At the library, the installation unfolds in two modes: during the day, visitors encounter different materials within the building; after closing, the windows covering the facade is transformed into a large-scale video projection. In dialogue with its companion site at MLAG, just a short walk away, the work asks how public institutions like the library might hold space for climate justice claims — across time, disciplines, and forms of visibility.

Accessibility

Mobility impairment:
The public library has step-free access at the main entrance facing towards Bergen Storsenter. The doors are wide and open automatically. The library has several floors and an elevator (the door is 90 cm wide). The minimum dimensions of all relevant doorways are 90 cm wide (the door to the elevator to use the toilet on the ground floor).

Restrooms:
The toilets at the public library are open to all genders and are located on the ground floor. At the public library it costs 10 kroner to use the toilet, but it is free for paying guests in the café Amalies Hage.
